And it’s a good time to remember to get your dryer vent cleaned, too! The moist lint that comes lose while drying laundry can clog up inside your dryer vent. Not long ago, Eddie was cleaning a dryer vent and found it clogged with dirt! The vent duct went outside to a “shepherd’s hook” which will usually keep dirt and other foreign material out of the ductwork, but not this time! That dryer is working much more efficiently now!

While “Spring Cleaning” another home, Eddie checked the dryer inside filter (prior to starting to clean the dryer vent duct) and found the filter was packed solid with lint! The client said they did not know that there was a filter in the dryer, that needed to be cleaned after each use. They had never cleaned the dryer inside filter since they purchased the dryer! Cleaning the lint from that inside filter made a big difference in how quickly the dryer finished a load of laundry!

One client said the dryer vent in their home had not been cleaned out “for a while”. As Eddie started to clean out that dryer vent, more and more lint came out. So much lint came out of that dryer vent, there must have only been a very little flow of dryer exhaust air going through it. A clogged dryer vent can be a fire hazard. How Much Lint Collects in a Dryer Vent?

Ever wonder how much lint collects in a dryer vent?

lint clogging a dryer ventEvery time you dry a load of laundry, moist lint from your drying laundry collects in the exhaust path of clothes dryers. This lint collects inside in vent duct work each time the dryer is used.

This lint that collects in your dryer vent constricts your dryer vent duct, so less and less air can pass through it.

This means your dryer will take longer and longer to dry each load of laundry. Laundry will still be damp at the end of a timed drying cycle. And you will start to see clumps of dryer lint hanging out of your dryer vent cap.

These are signs your dryer vent needs to be professionally cleaned.

According to data from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the leading cause of thousands of fires in homes each year involving clothes dryers is failure to clean the dryer. And the NFPA recommends dryer vent cleaning each year, or whenever you notice that it takes longer than usual to get a load of laundry dried.

Talking with a fellow about dryer vent cleaning, he said his residential dryer vent was cleaned two years ago, and his dryer was still drying laundry ok.

Get a Thoroughly Cleaned Dryer Vent

Regular Dryer Vent Cleaning Is Better

The neighbor of one of our clients asked A Lint Free Vent to clean their dryer vent, too.

roof dryer vent cap with stuck flapperThe neighbor had not had their dryer vent cleaned in several years, but they thought the dryer vent didn’t need cleaning because they were not seeing lint blown out the dryer vent cap and onto their roof.

We went up on the roof to make sure the dryer vent cap was not somehow restricted. We found this model dryer vent cap has a flapper inside. The flapper was supposed to open while the dryer was running, and then close when the dryer stopped. Apparently, the flapper had been jammed in the cap since it had been installed (several years ago), and no lint could come out. That was why the clients never saw lint blowing out onto their roof.

Recently, a home owner in Neptune Beach told us it was taking longer and longer to dry a load of laundry. A dryer vent restricted by lint accumulation can cause this. Sometimes, we are called because dryers overheat and cannot finish drying a load of laundry; I have found those dryer vents also clogged with lint.

Imagine my surprise when I removed the dryer vent cap on the side of the home and found a plant had invaded the dryer vent. The warm, moist dryer exhaust air in the vent was perfect for the plant root. As you can see in the following video, the plant was growing nicely but also clogging the dryer vent!

Happily, with the plant root and the lint removed from the dryer vent, our client’s dryer was back to drying loads of laundry as expected. Another happy client!

Residential Dryer Vent Duct Repair – Jacksonville FL
